About

I felt so grateful when I was finally correctly diagnosed—and then a beat later I wondered: now what?

I had to relearn so much I thought I knew about food, learn to advocate for myself, and come face to face with my own prejudices.

Eventually I realized that ‘eating healthy’ is about more than carbs and protein: it’s a cultural, psychological, and social justice issue. And I realized that sharing my struggles and discoveries could help others.

My 30-year science career, and my MS in biostatistics (U. of Washington) together with my MFA in creative writing (NW Institute of Literary Arts), put me in the perfect position to write Kickass Healthy LADA, the book that will support and empower LADAs and their loved ones.

I am a science-informed creative writer, and events coordinator at my local bookstore, following my career as a field biologist. My two-dozen publications include pieces in The Iowa Review, River Teeth, Raven Chronicles, and Terrain’s Letters to America Series. My work has been nominated for a Pushcart; featured by “The Humble Essayist;” and been a finalist or winner in several contests including Oregon Quarterly’s Northwest Perspectives.

My article “A Diabetes called LADA” appeared in the February 2021 edition of The Good Life Magazine.

This website and book are my way to give back, knowing how blessed I have been by luck, privilege, and support.
